It is almost time. Newcastle United is getting closer to their day of reckoning. While not winning or qualifying for Champions League football on Sunday, when the Magpies face Everton, will determine Newcastle’s summer spending power. For that reason, a victory is critical.

Bruno Guimaraes is one Newcastle United player who has already left his mark on the club’s history. When the Brazilian signed, he promised to become a legend at United, but few believed him when he spoke of his ambitions on Tyneside. But here we are, and he is three points and 90 minutes away from leading the team to what could be their best season in a century – certainly in the modern age.

Bruno and his United teammates have some unfinished business in the competition. They haven’t competed in the Europa League since 2013, the consolation prize on Sunday if they don’t outperform Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, or Chelsea, but their recent foray into Europe’s highest cup tournament has piqued interest.
Eddie Howe’s side were eliminated from the competition at the start of the 2023/24 season, having been assigned one of the most difficult groups in competition history. They only won once, controversially, and despite being in the top two with only twenty minutes remaining, they fell to fourth place as AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund all outperformed them.
So, for Bruno and co., returning there is personal. And ahead of the match, Guimaraes has been using social media to convey a message of calm and positivity ahead of the Saturday clash with David Moyes’ Everton.

Taking to his Instagram account, Bruno posted a pic to his story showing a little girl with a teddy bear in the rain, accompanied by the words: “Nao existe dia ruim pra quem entende que acordar ja e vitoria.”

Obviously that one is in his mother tongue, Portuguese. Translated into English, it reads: “There is no bad day for those who understand that waking up is already a victory.”

Cryptic? Maybe. But it’s clear the player is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, as he always seems to, heading into what feels like a white hot weekend of football as five teams look to claim three available places in the Champions League for next season.
