Following Sunderland’s stunning 2-0 victory against Sheffield United in the Championship playoff final, Pickford used the occasion to make a light-hearted joke at Newcastle United, Sunderland’s strong local rival.

Pickford congratulated Sunderland on their return to the Premier League in a post-match social media message, emphasising the club’s accomplishment in front of their devoted fan base.

But it was his cheeky remark about Newcastle that drew the attention of fans from both sides of the Tyne-Wear divide.

Pickford wrote: “Absolutely buzzing for the lads! Sunderland back where they belong – the Premier League. The only team from the North East that’s making the noise this season!”

The comment sparked a lively debate among supporters. While Sunderland fans reveled in Pickford’s passionate support, Newcastle fans were quick to respond, pointing out their own club’s achievements, including their strong finish in the Premier League.

This isn’t the first time Pickford has engaged in banter with Newcastle supporters. The goalkeeper, who has often been a target for jeers when playing at St. James’ Park, has embraced his role as a pantomime villain in the rivalry.

Pickford’s comments underscore the enduring essence of the Tyne-Wear rivalry, a footballing animosity that continues to elicit emotion throughout the North East.

As Sunderland celebrates its promotion, all eyes will be on next season’s Premier League dates to see if the Black Cats and Magpies will face off again on the pitch, reigniting one of English football’s most storied rivalries.

For the time being, Pickford’s dig has put fuel to the fire, and supporters will be looking forward to the next chapter in this age-old rivalry.
