Rangers may be in line for significant investment from 49ers Enterprises, but their expectations have already been dashed.
The US investors have completed their ownership of the Ibrox club, with significant changes likely in Govan.
There has been speculation of an urgent £20 million investment in the Rangers club as they look to rebuild their squad.
However, former Celtic player Chris Sutton has pointed out a disparity in investment between the two Glasgow clubs.
Sutton believes Celtic have a number on the Gers
Celtic’s lead over Rangers has grown to four years after the Ibrox team won the Scottish Premiership in 2021.
That indomitable Rangers title is only a blemish on the Bhoys’ overall recent record, as they have won 13 of the last 14 championships.
However, news of a cash injection will lift spirits at Ibrox, with £20 million likely to be invested.
While that may not seem like a lot of money to the modern football fan, it would go a long way in the Scottish Premiership.
Indeed, Rangers spent £12 million on Tore Andre Flo in 2000, the most they had ever spent on a single player.
Player | Signed from | Fee | Year |
Tore Andre Flo | Chelsea | £12million | 2000 |
Ryan Kent | Liverpool | £7.5million | 2019 |
Michael Ball | Everton | £6.5million | 2001 |
Mikel Arteta | Barcelona | £6million | 2002 |
Although the Glasgow club plans to invest, Sutton reminded supporters of Celtic’s financial prowess in an interview with the Daily Record (May 31).
He stated: “The new Rangers owners are already discussing a £20 million initial investment in the team.
“That’s a decent chunk of money for Scottish football – but not to Celtic. They spent about double that in the last two windows, so that shows you the challenge Rangers face.
“You would expect Celtic to go and spend at least the same again this summer. They’ll have to.”
Rangers must remain patient for success under 49ers
While many may expect rapid results at Ibrox, the revolution will not happen overnight.
Yes, the Glasgow club will receive cash, and they will have a new management, but this does not guarantee rapid success.
Rangers must build the groundwork for a new chapter, and whomever takes the Ibrox helm must be allowed time.
It remains to be seen whether Davide Ancelotti or Francesco Fariolo will be appointed, but a decision is forthcoming.
New players must be given equal time, and while progress will occur, it may take some time.
