The Detroit Lions, like the majority of NFL teams, enter free agency with some questions. Some decisions have already been made, such as the team’s loss of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets. But there’s no point in lamenting the past, and the club is now focused on preparing for another successful season.
Many of the Lions’ important players, including quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, are expected to return in 2025, but others are uncertain. One player about to enter free agency is sending a fairly intimidating message to the rest of the club.
Detroit Lions Star Says, ‘Ya’ll ‘Know Who to Pay’
The Lions have some key players entering free agency, including cornerback Carlton Davis III. Free agency begins on March 12, the official start date of the NFL’s 2025 season.
Davis used social media on Wednesday, March 5, to issue a warning of sorts.
On his X account, he wrote, “I will not make the same mistake twice. If you want your defense strengthened, you know who to pay. Turn on the videotape.”
Yikes. Davis is likely to be one of the most sought-after free agents at his position this season. According to Spotrac and Over the Cap, he may get a three-year contract worth $43.9 million or more.
NFL experts and analysts have named the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets as teams interested in him. It would be amazing to see him back with Glenn in New York.
Free Agency Movement Starting Early
Even though free agency has not yet begun, there is much speculation regarding future moves and existing contracts. When the season begins on March 12, there is a good probability that several contracts will be signed on the spot.
The Detroit Lions are expecting to see a familiar face on one of their opposing clubs. Former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Jonah Jackson will return to the NFC North for the 2025 season, according to ESPN expert and commentator Adam Schefter, who said on Tuesday, March 4. On X, Schefter stated that the Los Angeles Rams will trade the veteran tackle to the Chicago Bears in return for a 2025 sixth-round pick.

Detroit selected Jackson in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft. He signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Rams last summer, following a four-year stint with the Detroit Lions. However, he had some injury issues during his most recent season with the Rams.
This is the first of several transactions that will take place throughout the free agency period. Time will tell if adding Jackson to the Bears is a wise move for them, but it will ensure that Lions fans see him twice on the field for the team’s two games against NFC rivals.
