Adil Aouchiche has made a strong impression on loan at Portsmouth, and his future beyond the summer is now a subject of growing speculation. The 22-year-old former France youth international, who joined Sunderland in 2023, is currently with Pompey after making a temporary switch in January.
A product of Paris Saint-Germain’s esteemed academy, Aouchiche made three senior appearances for the French giants before moving on to Saint-Etienne and Lorient. However, after failing to cement a starting role at the Stadium of Light, his future with the Black Cats remains uncertain.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Aouchiche could seek a permanent move to secure regular playing time elsewhere. According to Football League World, Portsmouth fan pundit Miltos Ioannidis weighed in on whether Pompey should attempt to sign him permanently.
“Adil Aouchiche is a very good footballer, and there was never an argument about his footballing ability,” Ioannidis stated. “Sunderland fans might say he’s not good enough at this level, but he’s a brilliant technician who offers so much with the ball at his feet.”
While his technical ability has never been in doubt, Ioannidis admitted that Aouchiche’s “biggest surprise” has been his incredible work rate. “He had to fill big boots replacing Callum Lang, but his work rate has been absolutely sensational. Even in games where we haven’t played well, he’s been crucial. Take the Leeds game, for example—he played a very important role.”
With Sunderland’s squad set for possible changes in the summer, Aouchiche may slide further down the pecking order. That scenario could give Portsmouth a chance to secure a permanent deal if they choose to pursue him.
While Ioannidis is open to the idea, he acknowledged one key concern—Aouchiche’s lack of direct goal contributions. “I don’t think he’s been bad. He’s been very decent for us. His energy is underrated, but he hasn’t produced as many goals or assists as others. Players like Josh Murphy are in incredible form right now, which has maybe overshadowed him.”
Even so, he believes Aouchiche could still make an impact in the latter stages of the season. “I think he’s due a goal or an assist soon. Then, it’s a case of seeing Sunderland’s stance—whether they want to keep him or let him go.”
As for a potential move to Portsmouth, Ioannidis remained optimistic. “I wouldn’t be against it, especially if he finishes the season strong. He’s a good player, fits the system, and suits the club’s style. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see him in a Portsmouth shirt again next season.”
