Allan Campbell’s Tannadice Return: Grit, Graft, but Goals Still Missing

Allan Campbell’s Dundee United return has seen the midfielder re-establish himself as a trusted starter under Jim Goodwin, but the manager is now urging the 26-year-old to couple his relentless work rate with some tangible attacking returns as the season nears its conclusion.

Since joining United on a five-month deal in January, Campbell has started eight of ten matches, showing the energy and aggression that defined his early career at Motherwell and contributed to Luton Town’s promotion to the Premier League. Yet, for all his industry, he’s yet to register a goal or notable attacking output — something Goodwin wants to see change.

“I’d like to see him getting on the end of crosses and contributing goals,” Goodwin said. “His work rate off the ball is incredible, his attitude in training is top drawer, but we need that final-third impact.”

Goodwin acknowledged the difficulties January signings face, especially those lacking recent game time, as Campbell did after frustrating loan spells at Millwall and Charlton, compounded by ankle and Achilles injuries.

Despite this, the boss has defended the midfielder’s contribution:

“He’s strengthened that midfield area and contributed to helping us get the top six. Confidence plays a part too – I’m sure there’s some frustration in Allan himself.”

Campbell’s short-term future remains uncertain, with no deal yet beyond the summer.

“Allan wanted a short-term contract before seeing what his options would be. That one is up in the air – we, and Allan, will have a decision to make.”

Whether or not he stays, Campbell’s next four matches could go a long way in shaping what comes next.
