Joelinton was forced off during Saturday’s defeat to Fulham with a knee injury and was later seen wearing a knee brace.

Newcastle are still examining the Brazilian and have not ruled him out of Wednesday’s match against Arsenal.

“Joey had a knee brace on as a precaution,” said Eddie Howe. “I would say he is a doubt, but we will give him every chance to be fit.

“Our centre midfield, we have good strength in depth – Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock – they all bring something different.”

Newcastle could welcome back Callum Wilson for the first time since December.

The striker has been out with a hamstring injury, but he is close to making a recovery.

“There is a chance, we have another training session to get through so we will see,” said Howe. “Let’s get through training before we make a decision.”

Newcastle enters Wednesday’s game in a strong position after defeating Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg at Emirates Stadium.

However, Howe has warned his troops against complacency as they prepare to face an Arsenal team who defeated Manchester City 5–0 on Sunday.

“My message is, we are at the halfway point in the tie,” he said. “Against any opposition the game is still very much alive.
