Liverpool’s final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park had all the makings of one of the game’s most memorable moments.
In a retro game filled by pure drama, there was even some good old-fashioned handbags near the end.
From a Liverpool perspective, the sight of Curtis Jones defending the away fans against Abdoulaye Doucoure’s taunting will be long remembered.
The Reds did drop two vital points against Everton, which could have an impact on their Premier League title chances.
While many Liverpool players did not shine, Jones emerged as an immediate star.
And, as the aftermath from his altercation with Doucoure develops, certain statements made by the Liverpool academy graduate about the Merseyside Derby in 2024 have taken on a new meaning.
Curtis Jones rates Merseyside Derby as top rivalry
Some may disagree with Jones’ decision to approach Doucoure about his behaviour towards Liverpool fans.
The 24-year-old will now miss Sunday’s game against Wolves, at a time when Arne Slot would prefer to have everyone available.
The reunion of Jones and Doucoure added to the tension on the pitch, possibly contributing to Slot’s dismissal.
Nonetheless, many would believe Curtis was quite within his rights to do what he did. And after revisiting an interview he gave to Sky Sports in October 2024, it becomes clear why the midfielder felt compelled to intercede.
When asked to choose his top rivalry as a Liverpool player, Jones immediately chooses Everton over Manchester United as number one.
“Yeah, that just comes down to being a Scouser,” smiled the England international.
“I’m a Liverpool fan from a kid and my family are as well. Obviously now I’ve got friends who are Everton fans and that back and forth with them is always nice as well, just to say if you go and win the game it’s our city until the next time.”
How long will Jones be suspended for?
Liverpool could do without any additional absences from the squad, given their demanding schedule.
However, Jones has received a pass from the bulk of the fanbase after demonstrating his dedication to the cause.
Slot will only be without his No.17 for one game, and Liverpool’s forthcoming encounter against Wolves is arguably the easiest of the bunch.
Jones should then be fit and able to play games against Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle at full strength.
And when Everton comes to town on April 2nd, you can know Curtis will be eager to get his teeth into it.
