Could Jose Mourinho really be the next Rangers boss? According to former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, the Special One is interested in taking over at Ibrox. However, despite his public admiration for the club, there are major doubts about whether Rangers can realistically attract him.
Mourinho’s Hint at Ibrox Move
Before his Fenerbahce side’s 3-1 defeat to Rangers, Mourinho sent fans into a frenzy when he told the BBC:
“Why not in the future?” when asked about managing in Scotland.
He also praised both Rangers and Celtic, calling them huge clubs with passionate fanbases—a setting that has always appealed to him.
Is Mourinho Serious About Rangers?
Mick Brown believes Mourinho is trying to talk himself into a new job, rather than genuinely targeting Rangers. Speaking to Football Insider, he said:
“Mourinho wants to manage Rangers. It’s a huge club, the fans are passionate, and it’s a high-profile role—things he loves.”
However, he added:
“I think it’s just Mourinho flying the flag. He’s going ‘I’m here, I’m available’, maybe he’s had enough at Fenerbahce and wants out.”
Could Rangers Pull Off a Shock?
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson suggested that hiring Mourinho would “stun the world”, but Brown remains skeptical:
“I don’t think Rangers are in a position to attract Mourinho right now, as much as he might want the job and the idea of what the job would be.”
Steven Gerrard’s Return Complicated
While Steven Gerrard is still seen as the “dream appointment”, Rangers icon Ally McCoist has raised concerns over potential tax issues if Gerrard returns to the UK within a year of his time in Saudi Arabia.
With Mourinho, Gerrard, Rafa Benitez, and others linked, Rangers’ managerial hunt remains wide open—but could the club shock the world and land a true footballing icon?
