Rangers centre-back Leon Balogun has made it clear that he is ready to extend his stay at Ibrox, insisting he is still capable of competing at the highest level despite his expiring contract.
The 36-year-old defender, who rejoined the club on a one-year deal last summer, has been an experienced presence in the squad but is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. However, Balogun has now confirmed that he feels in great shape and would be more than happy to continue playing for Rangers if the club offers him a new deal.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Nigerian defender responded with confidence when asked if he could go again next season:
“Definitely. I feel good. I didn’t play a lot at the beginning of my career, maybe that helps me now. I feel really, really good.”
Balogun also credited Rangers’ coaching staff for managing his workload efficiently, ensuring that he remains physically capable of competing at the highest level:
“The managers have always been quite helpful and supportive in managing me, even though I don’t think I give them too much to manage when it comes to training and load. If I can play at a great club like this and add a bit more success, then I have absolutely nothing against it.”
🔎 Will Rangers Hand Balogun a New Contract?
Balogun’s experience and leadership make him a valuable presence in the dressing room, but Rangers’ recruitment team will have to weigh up the benefits of offering a new deal to a 36-year-old defender.
The Nigerian international was previously released by the club in 2022, only to be re-signed in 2023 after injuries depleted the squad. This season, he has played a bit-part role, with younger defenders like Leon King and John Souttar also competing for minutes alongside established names like Connor Goldson and Ben Davies.
However, his mentality and winning experience could still prove crucial as Rangers look to rebuild under new leadership.
🇳🇬 Balogun Still Open to Nigeria Call-Up
Despite not featuring for Nigeria in recent months, Balogun shut down retirement speculation, confirming that he is still available for international selection.
“Representing Nigeria is a huge honour for me always, and I would like to think that people always saw that in my performances – I don’t come here to joke. I’m up for it.”
The defender clarified that he never officially retired from international football, leaving the door open for a potential return to the Super Eagles squad.
📌 What’s Next?
With Rangers set for a summer rebuild, the club must decide whether Balogun’s experience and leadership warrant a contract extension or if they should look to younger defensive options.
For now, the veteran remains focused on helping the team achieve success this season, but whether he will still be at Ibrox next year remains up in the air.
