Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has provided an injury update ahead of Sunday’s Glasgow Derby, confirming that captain Callum McGregor remains a doubt, while Liam Scales could require surgery.
McGregor has missed training this week due to a calf issue, though he trained alone on Friday and hopes to rejoin the squad on Saturday. His fitness will be assessed ahead of the highly anticipated clash.
“We’ve had a good week, so one more day to go,” Rodgers said. “One or two we are just assessing. Callum, obviously, has had a similar week to last week, and we’ll make a decision on him tomorrow.”
Squad Update: Bernardo Out, Forrest Returns, Scales in Doubt
There was positive news regarding James Forrest, who has recovered and will be back in the squad for the derby. However, Paulo Bernardo remains unavailable and will play no part in the match.
“Obviously, James Forrest is back in the squad, which is really good,” Rodgers confirmed. “Paulo Bernardo is still a little bit away.”
The biggest concern surrounds Liam Scales, who is still waiting to find out if he will need surgery on a cheekbone injury sustained against St Mirren a few weeks ago.
“Liam Scales has obviously had an issue with his cheekbones, so we’re just waiting to finalize whether he needs an operation or not,” Rodgers explained.
Defensive Concerns Ahead of the Derby
Scales has recently lost his starting spot to Auston Trusty, who has settled in well since his £6 million summer move. The American defender has formed a solid partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers, but having a reliable backup like Scales remains crucial for Celtic’s depth.
With Sunday’s derby looming, Celtic will be hoping McGregor passes his fitness test, while a final decision on Scales’ potential surgery is expected soon.
