Atlanta United, FC Cincinnati, Columbus Crew, Portland Timbers and Inter Miami CF Players Fined by MLS Disciplinary Committee

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has issued several rulings following Matchday 4 of the 2025 season, with players from multiple clubs receiving fines for various infractions during their respective matches.

Among those disciplined is Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almirón, who has been penalized for violating the league’s Simulation-Embellishment Policy.

Almirón Fined for Simulation

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has fined Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almirón an undisclosed amount for violating the league’s Simulation-Embellishment Policy during two separate incidents in the 41st and 81st minutes of Atlanta’s match against Inter Miami CF on March 16. The Paraguayan playmaker, who has been a key figure for Atlanta United, was deemed to have exaggerated contact in an attempt to deceive the referee, prompting the league to take action.

While Almirón has been an influential presence in Atlanta’s midfield, his repeated involvement in simulation has now drawn the attention of league officials. MLS has taken a strict stance against embellishment in an effort to maintain fair play and sportsmanship, and Almirón’s actions have been reviewed and met with disciplinary measures.

Flores Fined for Delaying Exit

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has also fined FC Cincinnati defender Gilberto Flores an undisclosed amount for failing to leave the field in a timely manner following his dismissal in the 83rd minute of Cincinnati’s match against Charlotte FC on March 15. Players are expected to promptly exit the pitch after being shown a red card or substituted, and Flores’ delay led to league intervention.

Cincinnati, currently pushing for a strong start to the 2025 season, will be hoping this disciplinary action does not affect team morale. Flores, a regular in the defensive lineup, will now need to ensure he adheres to game conduct policies moving forward.

Amundsen Fined for Similar Infraction

Another player penalized for failing to leave the field promptly is Columbus Crew defender Malte Amundsen, who has also been fined an undisclosed amount for delaying his exit in the 61st minute of Columbus’ match against San Diego FC on March 15. The Danish defender has been an important figure in Columbus’ backline, and while this offense may seem minor, it reflects the league’s broader efforts to enforce discipline and maintain the flow of matches.

The Crew, who have been in competitive form this season, will be looking to move past this incident as they continue their campaign.

Kelsy Penalized for Hands to Face Incident

In a separate ruling, Portland Timbers forward Kevin Kelsy has been fined for violating the hands to the face, head, or neck policy in the 90+ minute of Portland’s match against LA Galaxy on March 16. Physical confrontations are closely monitored by MLS officials, and any incidents involving contact to an opponent’s face, head, or neck are met with strict consequences.

Kelsy, who has been an integral part of Portland’s attacking force, will now need to be more mindful of his conduct during matches. The Timbers will hope that this does not become a recurring issue as they aim to stay competitive in the Western Conference.

Alba Fined for Repeat Offense

Lastly, Inter Miami CF defender Jordi Alba has been fined an undisclosed amount for violating the same hands to the face, head, or neck policy in the 45+ minute of Miami’s match against Atlanta United on March 16. Notably, this is Alba’s second violation of this rule this season, which may lead to further scrutiny from the league if similar incidents occur in future matches.

Alba, a seasoned veteran with vast experience at the highest levels of European football, will need to exercise greater discipline on the pitch to avoid additional fines or potential suspensions. Miami, which has been striving for consistency in the early part of the season, will also be looking to ensure their defensive leader maintains composure during matches.

MLS Disciplinary Committee Reinforces League Standards

The MLS Disciplinary Committee continues to enforce strict policies aimed at maintaining fairness and integrity within the league. The latest round of fines serves as a reminder to players that simulation, unnecessary delays, and physical altercations will not be tolerated. As the season progresses, clubs and players will be expected to adhere to these regulations to ensure smooth gameplay and uphold the professional standards set by MLS.
