Kris Boyd claims Rangers fans have tried to ‘escape’ Celtic fans and what they ‘won’t confess publicly

As the dust settles on Celtic’s match against Rangers, it’s been an eventful few days in Glasgow.

Things were marginally disturbed on Sunday as Brendan Rodgers’ team dominated proceedings in Scotland, looking to win another Premiership title and possibly a treble.

Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Diff Points
1 Celtic 30 24 3 3 89 20 69 75
2 Rangers 30 19 5 6 62 28 34 62
3 Hibernian 30 11 11 8 45 41 4 44
4 Aberdeen 30 12 7 11 38 46 -8 43

It’s no bother because normal service will resume at the end of the season, but Celtic suffered a deserved loss to Rangers, and the Ibrox clash after the split is going to be even more interesting now.

In the midst of all of this, Barry Ferguson’s side remains in the Europa League, hoping to achieve European triumph that only one Glasgow club has ever achieved.

However, following the derby game, Kris Boyd had some intriguing comments on how Rangers fans perceive their European journey, not just this season, but in previous years, in comparison to what is going on domestically.

Kris Boyd says Rangers fans are using Europe to ‘escape’ Celtic fans

At the end of the day, the Scottish Premiership and other domestic trophies will always be the primary focus.

Boyd wanted to emphasise that being in Europe is simply a ‘plus’, but Rangers fans have recently used it to ‘leave’ the Celtic Park faithful, as he told Sky Sports News (19/03/25 at 10:30 a.m.).

The former striker noted how Celtic have been ‘the dominant force’ and Rangers fans ‘might not come out and say it publicly’, but they want those trophies.

“Over the last few years, when Rangers have had success in Europe, a lot of the fans have moved towards that,” said Boyd.

“Obviously, got to a final and got to the latter stages of competitions. Rangers fans have hung onto that and that has been their escape from a lot of Celtic fans.

“To be honest, if you got to speak to any Rangers fans, they might not come out and say it publicly, but you need to win trophies back home. There is no getting away from it.

“Getting into the last six or the last eight, semi-finals, finals or whatever it may be in Europe. I always think it’s a bonus. It’s a reward for the performances you put in the previous season, that you represent your country in Europe again.

“But, for me, the be-all and end-all is winning trophies domestically. Winning league titles. And, you have got to say, Celtic, for a period of time now, have been the dominant force in Scottish football.”

Scotland’s most successful club continues to march on

Celtic’s victory over Rangers in the League Cup final at Hampden Park in December became them Scotland’s most successful club.

Celtic has 119 titles to their name, with more to follow in the coming months.

It’s only a matter of time before the Premiership championship is secured, followed by a simple task of defeating St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup semi-final and Aberdeen or Hearts in the final.

If that happens, it will not only be another Treble for Celtic, but also for Rodgers, who has annihilated everyone who has stood in his way in Scotland.
