The Irishman signed Kundai Benyu during his first term as Hoops manager, and the midfielder cannot understand why it didn’t work out for him in Scotland.
Kundai Benyu, a former Celtic midfielder, recalled his three years in Glasgow’s East End as a ‘terrible experience’ and feels Brendan Rodgers neglected him completely.
The Zimbabwe international joined the Hoops for free from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2017, signing a four-year contract at Parkhead.
However, he would only make four appearances for the club, all of which came during his first season.
Benyu, aged 27, spent time on loan at Oldham Athletic and Helsingborg before joining English minnows Wealdstone on a free transfer in 2020, during Neil Lennon’s second spell as Hoops manager.
The Camden-born player later played two years in Iceland with Vestri and IBV before joining Zimbabwean club CAPS United in January.
And the former Parkhead kid believes Rodgers’ tough approach has had a long-term bad influence on his career.
Speaking to New Zimbabwe, he said: “When he (Rodgers) called me, I was overjoyed because he is a big manager who has managed (Philippe) Coutinho, Raheem Sterling, and others.”
“As an 18-year-old teenager, I couldn’t resist that.
