“Stop that,” John Hartson completely disagreed with the likely SPFL call that could affect Celtic’s title chances

Celtic and Brendan Rodgers have had another good season, but that was to be expected.

A lot remains to be done, including the final set of games, which are away at St Johnstone on Sunday before the split, and putting those trophies in the cabinet.

Celtic currently have 119 trophies, more than any other club in Scottish football history, and a 55th Premiership championship is on the way.

Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Diff Points
1 Celtic 31 25 3 3 92 20 72 78
2 Rangers 31 20 5 6 66 31 35 65
3 Hibernian 31 12 11 8 48 41 7 47
4 Aberdeen 31 13 7 11 42 47 -5 46

But, in these coming years, things could change for Celtic, especially if the SPFL change how the whole league itself is structured.

As of now, it’s a 12-man league, with St Johnstone at the bottom and the regular suspects showing everyone how it’s done.

However, change is on the way, and Rodgers may need to take a different approach to meet the club’s objectives.

Celtic hero John Hartson wants SPFL expansion

Nothing has been decided yet, and the clubs have not been consulted or voted on, however it has been claimed that the SPFL may push for a ten-man league.

John Hartson is opposed to this because he prefers a ’16-team’ league because the existing setup is’mundane’.

When Hartson joined Celtic in 2001, under great manager Martin O’Neill, the Premiership was a 12-man league, but the former striker now believes there are enough ‘big clubs’ in the lower levels to make it work, as he told Go Radio.

“I think it can become mundane at times,” responded Hartson about the current 12-man league. “I think the fact that, sometimes, you play the top six four times, and the only reason you stop that is by adding more teams to the top league here in Scotland.

“Say, for instance, you put another four teams in there. I think there are enough big clubs in the Championship to compete. I really do. We can go through them, if you like. The ones that we feel that come up and down for most seasons, if you like.

“If you look at 16 teams, that’s 30 league games, then maybe you play each other home and away, then the top six will play each other one more time. That’s what I would prefer.

“It gives, not smaller clubs, but more of a chance to play against the top teams in the league. That’s what I would like to see.”

League expansion would be a boost for a Celtic legend

Celtic may be on their way to the title, but the Championship has been more closer and more competitive until the last few weeks.

Falkirk, who are currently eight points ahead of Scott Brown’s Ayr United, appear to be on track for promotion back to the top flight.

However, if the league was enlarged, Celtic great Brown would have the opportunity to take those extra Premiership spots and benefit from the expansion, rather than making life more difficult if the league was cut further.

And, let’s be honest, that would be far more fun.
