Newcastle United need to add a striker to help Alexander Isak.

That will be the Magpies’ goal this summer, with Callum Wilson likely leaving St James’ Park. His Newcastle United contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the season.

While Will Osula has a lot of talent and is progressing, Newcastle will want someone of higher calibre to act as Alexander Isak’s understudy.

Signing a striker will be difficult for Paul Mitchell, but an opportunity may have presented itself to Newcastle United’s sporting director.

Newcastle United offered Atalanta striker

With the 2025 summer transfer window approaching, agents are preparing their clients for future movements.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United have been approached by intermediaries about signing Mateo Retegui.

Retegui is currently playing in Serie A for Atalanta, where he has 26 goals in all competitions this season. That is one more than Alexander Isak has scored this season, as the Swedish striker netted his 25th goal in Newcastle’s victory over Crystal Palace.

The Chronicle adds that Retegui could be available for a cost of around £50 million.

For that kind of money, the 25-year-old would surely only arrive as a replacement for Isak, rather than competition.

Mateo Retegui tipped to become a ‘top player’

Retegui was born in Argentina but represented Italy internationally.

He plays alongside Sandro Tonali for the Azzurri, and Retegui has 18 caps and six goals.

His goal total this season has been amazing, and Italy manager Luciano Spalletti feels Retegui has everything it takes to be a ‘top player’.

“He’s a very serious lad,” Spalletti told the Guardian in October 2024.

“Inside the box, he is lethal. And now he has learned how to connect with the team better. He’s going to become a top player.”

Despite having room for improvement and being made available to Newcastle United, it is tough to see Retegui being the second Italian member of Eddie Howe’s side.

Unless Isak leaves this summer, Newcastle will not invest £50 million on a striker. Furthermore, Retegui will not join a club where he will be second choice after scoring so many goals in Serie A and the Champions League for Atalanta.
