Barry Ferguson Drops Bombshell on Future: It’s Rangers Job or Bust

Barry Ferguson has made a seismic declaration about his managerial future, insisting he has no interest in coaching anywhere else if he isn’t kept on as Rangers’ permanent manager beyond this season.

The former Ibrox skipper, currently in charge on an interim basis, delivered a passionate statement that underscores just how deeply personal the role is for him.

“This is my club,” Ferguson said bluntly when asked whether his recent coaching stint had reignited a broader managerial appetite. “I wasn’t interested in going back into coaching but I got an opportunity I never thought I would get—and I’ve enjoyed every single second of it. Some of the results I’ve not enjoyed, those have hurt me. But I’ve come back in ready to face it.”

With Kevin Thelwell now appointed as sporting director and a potential takeover by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises gathering pace, Rangers are clearly headed for a summer of overhaul. Still, Ferguson is adamant: it’s the Ibrox hotseat or nothing.

“If I get the job, I will make my club a better club,” he declared. “If I don’t, I will still support the club. I never looked at this long term—it was about sorting things short term. But I know what I want. That’s either managing this football club or going back to my ambassadorial role. Nothing else.”

As speculation swirls with big-name contenders like Steven Gerrard and Jose Mourinho reportedly on the radar, Ferguson isn’t backing down from the competition.

“There are obviously names getting mentioned who have a lot more experience than myself,” he admitted, “but I’ll always back myself.”

It’s clear that for Barry Ferguson, Rangers is more than just a job—it’s identity, legacy, and heart. And unless he gets the chance to carry that torch full-time, he’s prepared to walk away from coaching entirely.
