Barry Ferguson Fires Warning To His Rangers Squad Following a Lackadaisical Display Against St Mirren

Barry Ferguson has issued a blunt message to his Rangers squad, warning that no one—even those under contract—can feel safe amid the sweeping changes looming at Ibrox.

After a lacklustre 2-2 draw at St Mirren, where Rangers twice surrendered the lead, Ferguson made it crystal clear that every player is under the microscope as a transformative summer approaches.

“I’ve said to them, even if you’re in contract, everybody’s playing for their future,” Ferguson declared. “As everybody here knows, there’s going to be a lot of changes and there needs to be a lot of changes. I said that last week after the game in Spain. We all know these changes need to happen. These changes are starting to happen.”

With Kevin Thelwell freshly installed as sporting director and a potential takeover by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises moving closer, the club’s future is set for a major reset—and Ferguson made it clear there’s no time to waste.

“We’re coming to the end of the season and it’s a short period that you get off, and then you’re straight back into pre-season,” Ferguson said. “Then you’ve got qualifiers for Europe and before you know it, the season starts. So, there’s a big job to be done here.”

Next up for Rangers is a blockbuster showdown against newly-crowned champions Celtic at Ibrox, and Ferguson expects every player to match his passion and commitment.

“Listen, it’s easy to get up for the games,” he added. “But every game you cross that white line when you’re representing this club, it should mean everything to you. We’ll have a day off and then we’ll get back to work. One thing is I’ll be coming in with my sleeves rolled up and ready to go—so will my staff. And the players better be too.”

Meanwhile, over at St Mirren, manager Stephen Robinson expressed his pride after fans raised a banner in his honour to celebrate the club making the top six for a third straight season.

“I’m very humbled and honoured that the fans think that highly to do something like that for me,” Robinson said, joking: “I was delighted there were no grey hairs in the picture! It made me look a lot younger.”
