Dundee United Duo Face Uncertain Futures After Disappointing Loan Spells

The futures of Richard Odada and Meshack Ubochioma at Dundee United remain uncertain as both players have struggled for game time during underwhelming loan stints abroad and in Scotland.

Odada, the Kenya international midfielder, joined Serbian side OFK Beograd, who currently sit third in their league. However, his impact has been limited — just five appearances, including two starts, with no involvement in the last three matches. Meanwhile, Nigerian winger Meshack, on loan at Livingston, has yet to start a match and has logged just 92 minutes across six substitute appearances since his January move.

Both players are under contract at Tannadice for one more season, and Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin plans to reassess their roles during pre-season:

“It hasn’t worked out up to now, but they are still under contract and will come back to us in pre-season. We’ll assess them and have a conversation about the best way forward – for us and for them.”

While Goodwin noted Odada’s potential and Meshack’s ability to cause problems when focused, he conceded neither loan has met expectations.

In contrast, other United loanees have thrived:

  • Owen Stirton has scored nine goals in 14 matches for Montrose
  • Charlie Dewar is performing well at promotion-chasing Alloa
  • Adam Carnwath helped Peterhead win League Two
  • Sam Cleall-Harding impressed at Kelty Hearts earlier in the season

Meanwhile, Miller Thomson, who started the season in United’s first team and scored on opening day, has seen limited minutes at Falkirk, starting just once and making seven sub appearances. Goodwin emphasized that competition at a successful club like Falkirk is no bad thing for a young player’s development.

On David Babunski, who has made a handful of recent appearances off the bench, Goodwin confirmed the club still has time to decide whether to activate an option to extend his deal.

All eyes now turn to pre-season, where Odada and Meshack will get a final opportunity to prove they can still contribute at Tannadice.
