Another Rangers boss resigned as Celtic won their 55th Premiership title over the weekend.
Barry Ferguson left Rangers following his interim appointment, and there is speculation that Steven Gerrard will return to Glasgow.
Celtic dominated throughout the bulk of Gerrard’s first season in charge, just as they do now, but he did prevent the Bhoys from winning the ten, which will sting for a long time.
However, the former Liverpool midfielder only won one title, and Celtic have continued to chew up the honours since his departure to Aston Villa in 2021.
The 44-year-old’s terrible time in the Midlands did not continue long, as he went on to become manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq before quitting in January.
Danny Murphy’s Celtic disrespect ahead of Steven Gerrard’s possible Rangers return
It’s incredible how some individuals may have so little understanding about Scottish football yet pretend to have strong opinions as if they know what they’re talking about.
In Danny Murphy’s case, he stated that he ‘hasn’t watched enough Celtic or Rangers’ to predict how Gerrard will perform against Brendan Rodgers, his former manager.
However, the former Liverpool player continued to belittle Celtic by claiming on talkSPORT that ‘they aren’t brilliant’, despite the fact that they won the Premiership title by 17 points and are on track for the Treble.
“I am not surprised, because for Rangers, it’s an easy option,” said Murphy about the possible Gerrard appointment.
“When was the last time we had success? Who brought it for us? Who was able to knock Celtic off their perch? It was Stevie, wasn’t it?!
“There is no guarantee for Rangers, whoever they appoint, they have to do some really cute business in the transfer market, by all accounts, because the squad is inept compared to Celtic’s.
On whether Gerrard will stand up against Rodgers: “It’s hard for me to know, because I haven’t watched enough of Celtic or Rangers to see the gap. I know you can see the table and see the points, and what Rangers need from a player perspective. How his hands are going to be tied or not.
“If Stevie is given a decent budget, and able to bring some players in. They will be competitive. Celtic aren’t brilliant, are they? They are a good side. Brendan is good and more experienced.”
Rod Stewart doesn’t like Murphy’s Celtic comments
Fortunately, Murphy was called out on his statements while Celtic-obsessed Rod Stewart was listening to the radio station.
Host Jim White informed Murphy that he had gotten a text message from Stewart, who was upset with his comments on Celtic’s lack of success.
However, Murphy continued to spew his rubbish about how this Celtic team, who has won four titles in a row, are ‘no world beaters’.
Danny, you don’t watch much Scottish football, so how could you know?
“Sir Rod Stewart has just texted me, he isn’t like some of your comments that ‘Celtic aren’t very good,” said Jim White to Simon Jordan.
Jordan then responded: “I didn’t say that. Danny said that.”
Murphy then added: “What I am saying is, it’s not insurmountable to get to as good as their level, with a few good buys. They are a decent side. They are no world beaters.”
