Paul Gascoigne has disclosed that David Moyes delivered an X-rated message to Everton’s players on his first day in charge.

Gascoigne, 58, started his career at Newcastle United in 1985 and has played for a number of clubs in the UK and Europe, including Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers, and Middlesbrough, before joining Everton.

The Gateshead-born midfielder made his Everton debut in 2000 and went on to make 32 appearances in two years. During his stint at Goodison Park, the England icon collaborated with Walter Smith before being replaced by Moyes in March 2002.

And Gascoigne has recounted what Moyes told Everton’s players upon his arrival, as well as explaining the message behind his unexpected move to Burnley.

“I didn’t like the way he came to Everton when he was going to be manager, and that’s why I left,” he revealed to Esports Insider.

“He’s not played any top-level football or managed any big team. We’ve got eighteen internationals from the likes of Wales, Scotland, myself.

“He just came in, he says, ‘I’m the manager. I’ve seen how you played on Saturday. Mess about with me and I’ll cut your f**king balls off!’ Those were his first words, and I went: ‘Well, I won’t be staying with him.’

“He did ring us up and say, come back to the club. Give me a chance to work with you. But I’d made my position there.”

Moyes returned to Everton earlier this year to replace Sean Dyche, and Gascoigne has lauded the Scot’s performance since his return to Goodison in January.

He said: “Since he took over, yeah. He’s done really well. But he’s a good man. I think he’s mellowed a bit.”
