A major hint about Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future may have just dropped.

A significant development regarding the managerial situation at Leicester City has emerged with reports that assistant manager Brian Barry-Murphy is nearing an agreement to become the new manager of Cardiff City.

This move may offer an indication of the future of current Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, whose position has been subject to speculation following the club’s relegation from the Premier League in the 2024/25 season.

Leicester City’s relegation, alongside Southampton and Ipswich Town, followed a challenging period under van Nistelrooy, who joined the club in November and secured only four wins from 25 league matches. Discussions surrounding a potential managerial change at the King Power Stadium have been ongoing, with Danny Rohl previously identified as a possible replacement.

Brian Barry-Murphy joined Leicester City in December as an assistant to van Nistelrooy, having previously worked in the development team at Manchester City, where he was highly regarded by Pep Guardiola. Barry-Murphy has expressed ambitions to take on a central managerial role. According to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Barry-Murphy is close to filling the managerial vacancy at Cardiff City, with the two clubs having agreed upon a compensation package. Personal terms for Barry-Murphy’s new contract with Cardiff are reportedly in advanced stages, and an announcement is expected in the coming days. Cardiff City has been seeking a new manager since sacking Omer Riza in April, prior to their relegation to League One.

The impending departure of Barry-Murphy raises questions about Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future at Leicester City. In December, the club’s owner reportedly indicated that sacking van Nistelrooy would strain the club’s financial situation and compliance with Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Leicester City is currently facing a potential points deduction for breaching PSR rules during the 2023/24 season, which could limit their ability to dismiss the manager due to compensation costs. However, the departure of his assistant may place increased pressure on van Nistelrooy’s position.

Football expert Justin Peach has suggested Gary O’Neil as a “perfect” fit for Leicester, while Rohl remains an option. Barry-Murphy’s move to Cardiff City underscores the ongoing uncertainty at Leicester City as the club approaches a critical decision regarding its managerial leadership.
